Tongariro National Park Walks

These walks are still based around the National Park area and are easily reached by our transport.

Soda Springs Walking Track       (HALF DAY WALK)

A two hour 6km walk returning on the same track. This track is part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track and follows the Mangatepopo Stream. You will see Ngauruhoe's most recent lava flow which contrast starkly with older flows.

The Soda Springs are cold water springs that seep to the surface at the head of the Mangatepopo Stream. The rocks below the springs are coloured golden by iron oxide which has resulted from the breakdown of volcanic ash in the bog through which the springs surface.

Excellent views of the surrounding park but especially Mt Ngauruhoe where you stand at its base.

Taurewa Walking Track    (HALF DAY WALK)

A one hour thirty minute easy walking loop track. This is something different to our other walks in that it follows old tram lines and tracks form the logging days.

There are good examples of an unusual mix of of forest such as matai and totara. The forest also supports a rich diversity of bird life and there is a resident population of Kiwi however it is extremely unlikely you would see them.

Lake Rotopounamu Walk  (HALF DAY or COMBINATION WALK)

A very popular one hour and thirty minute walk around one of the most picturesque lakes in the park. The lake was created by a landslide 10,000 years ago and is now surrounded by a huge variety of native trees and other flora. Hours can be spent simply admiring the stands of rimu, matai and red beech and a whole plethora of ferns.

Whilst the walk can be completed in an hour and a half we allow double that with plenty of stops along the way. It can be lovely to have lunch on the beautiful beach at the eastern edge with a warm swim in summer.

Ohinetonga Walk     (DAY WALK)

About a 2 hour easy walk round trip. This area was heavily logged in the 1900's after the railway reached the area. This is a beautiful piece of bush that was saved and gives an idea of what the area must have looked like before the logging.

Tawa is the dominant tree species but there are a scattering of other trees. There is a huge old totara which must be many years old now and well worth the visit.
